Coloph: A relational database learning case tool

Coloph is my computer science final paper and work. It is available at http://coloph.herokuapp.com/. (It may take a few seconds to load if the site by someone has not been visited for some time)

Abstract: Databases are an important modern society component and the knowledge in this area
is valuable for the information technology professional. It is possible to obtain this knowledge
through the database course, mandatory in several computer science curricula. In the course,
it is addressed data modeling and database design. The students perform activities related to
a given data modeling problem, and to do so, they use academic and/or commercial CASE
tools. However, among the academic tools, there is not a tool which allows the data modeling
diagramming and is available on the web. As a solution, it was developed Coloph, a database
learning CASE tools prototype available on the Web, focusing on the conceptual, logical and
physical modeling. A bibliographic review in the topics of databases, data modeling, CASE
tools and distance education was performed. Based on that, the prototype requirements were
gathered. Subsequently, the prototype was applied to a case study, involving two groups: students and teachers from a database course. As a data gathering technique, surveys based on the
TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) methodology were used, in order to verify the prototype
acceptance among students and teacher. After the data analysis, it was verified that prototype
had a positive reception and acceptance among the students and teacher, especially regarding to
its availability on the Web.
